Location

Jordan

In late 80s, Jordanian government designated Petra as a tourist site, fencing it off and introducing entry fees and modern infrastructure. Families living in caves within the site were ordered to relocate to the nearby village of Umm Sayhoun, that was built for that very purpose. While the government offered housing with modern utilities, many resisted, citing ancestral ties to the caves. Protests and clashes erupted, with some families eventually moving to the village while others remained in the caves.
